Meet Bo Gray, a 2-year-old who is showing off the kind of power that music can have.
Amanda Bowman Gray recently posted a video of her son, Bo, singing “You Are My Sunshine” with his 11-year-old sister, Lydia. Bowman Gray’s son has Down syndrome, making the sing-along a big milestone in her son’s life.
“My daughter Lydia was watching Bo while I was in the shower. Came out to this,” Amanda Bowman Gray wrote on Facebook. “If she didn’t have a guitar, I don’t know if she would know how to babysit him. This is her go to.”
The song, “You Are My Sunshine,” has become somewhat of an anthem for Bo. The song has helped him develop more of a vocabulary, which is currently up to 12 words.
Along with Down syndrome, the 2-year-old was born with multiple heart and lung conditions, causing him to undergo several surgeries. During his last heart surgery, the family would sing “You Are My Sunshine” to cheer him up.
“After weeks and weeks (which ended up in months) of being in the hospital in a silent room of the CICU (Cardiac Intensive Care Unit) we got special permission to bring a guitar in and sing to him in hopes that it would comfort him,” Amanda Bowman Gray wrote on Facebook.
For the Bowman Gray family, music has a completely different meaning.
“It’s proof that music therapy works,” Amanda Bowman Gray explained on Facebook. “Every word he has learned has been through music and singing.”
